What decisions did we take in the 4th study visit of Project WAAP in Madrid, Spain?

See also all the results of the WAAP surveys below.

1) To prepare the common intermediate report to submit to national agencies, we'll complete the outputs of every WAAP study visit we've done so far, therefore all missing outputs of our study visits according to the application form will be determined and sent all partners by the project coordinator.

2) As you already know that Spanish team was studying on some titles related with the chapter 5 of WAAP manual and we've decided to include some of their best ones that are ;

a) Three customs that are peculiar to each country.

b) Three important festivals and their relation to the culture, history or religion of each country.

c) Loans from the other languages of the countries in the Comenius project. (loan : A word borrowed from another language; e.g. 'blitz' is a German word borrowed into modern English)

3) As for the project WAAP's second year's main activities; we will have the same activities we have done this year plus the ones below

- The distributing of the handbooks to related people of the school environment

- More surveys (refer to Evaluation issue in the application form)

- Multicultural events day each of which includes ;

a) A final conference including a medium-long speech given by an authorized person on the title of our project

b) A live show by multicultural chorus performing songs from different cultures or a multicultural drama group performing a play related with discrimination

c) A poster designing competition results of which will be exhibited within the conference hall on the same day with the show above (the title of the poster competition: love has no color)

d) Samples from the best traditional presentations; e.g international cuisines- costumes- music fair , exhibited on boards or stands that take place after the show above is finished in the conference hall

e) Other optional shows that is completely your school's decision

4) We were supposed to do a before survey-questionnaire forming the Base-Line Data Peculiar to each school (refer to application form pg 63 output 6) which we all have done successfully and also a post-survey questionnaire after each study visit forming the new data of our school's changes after the project activities done in each school, so each team will perform some more questionnaires finding the progress in their school.

5) A WAAP agenda, just like the one we've had this year, will be published and sent to all partners before the schools re-open, explaining the overall tasks of partner schools scheduled through weeks of the year.

7) According to the new survey results done in the Spanish partner school, Mss. Ana Ralero has been selected as the ARCO (anti racism contact officer).

"As we had already decided in Mossburg meeting that there would be be an official project WAAP meeting in Istanbul only if questions from partners directed and needed urgent clear explanation, therefore because there werent't any urgent questions from partner teachers during istanbul meeting , we had a small official meeting with local authorities aiming to increase the impact of the project WAAP in the hosting school instead.

1) According to the survey results, Nilgün TUTAL, the deputy head teacher and language teacher, has been chosen as the ARCO (Anti-racism contact officer) in the hosting Turkish School)

What decisions did we take in the 2^nd study visit of Project WAAP in Moosburg, Germany?

1) The deadline for the shared chapters of the WAAP manual book is the 15^th of June, 2010.

2) The sub-titles for the chapter of “Interesting traditions from partner countries” will be decided by the Spanish team and will be sent to all partners very soon.

3) The clear explanation of the next WAAP year’s full activities will be given by the coordinator in Madrid meeting upon which partners will exchange ideas.

4) There will be an official project WAAP meeting in Istanbul only if questions from partners directed and needed urgent clear explanation.

5) The dates of the next year’s multicultural event weeks are shown below for each of which minimum 2 students and one teacher will be brought.

6) For the German school, Mrs. Claudia Hegedüs has been chosen as the ARCO.

7) The evaluation forms produced by Jakob will be given to all students who

What decisions did we take in the 1st study visit of Project WAAP in Kolbiel, Poland?

1) To help all students overcome their shyness or ease their adaptation to the group, we’d better if we do a kind of workshop or game in which students can ask each other personal questions such as favorites, family, interests etc, this way they will be better to know about other students from different countries, which might make them feel more comfortable to start the cultural friendship we need.

2) To complete the chapters within the manual book published at the start of the next project year, we have tried to share the titles. While producing, keep the chapters on a medium number in pages so that some chapters can be easy to translate into your language and the whole production should be written with so understandable way that all parents can benefit easily, even the uneducated parents. Please also be very clear when giving recommendations, suggestions etc.
According to the sharing, the duties are;

3) To make things easier for everyone especially for the Spanish team, we should all prepare and send the detailed schedule of the further meeting weeks in advance so that partners could ask for allowance from their authorities easier.

4) After all these beautiful and meaningful works in her school, according to the surveys and suggestions; Ewa was chosen as the Anti Racism contact Officer in her school by her colleagues and students.

5) The new code of the conduct in our partner Poland school is that “they will have a new strategy to open their school environment to the world” which is described as doing more cross-cultural organizations through school already accepted and announced by the school administration.

6) Producing the WAAP manual book, as well as reviewing the web page “racismnoway”, one can also benefit from the book named “experiencing racism from the eyes of college students” which will be uploaded and sent to you soon.

7) If the German team finds any opportunity to arrange it, we might have an outdoor activity to mountains Alp during the Mosburg meeting either all together or divided into 2 groups one of which may have another activity rather than this.

8) Remember that according to the one of the approved decisions we took in Stockholm we were going to give teachers one day off during the further meeting, which we did in Poland and it really worked that we found really enough time to shop and work with videos and pictures

REPORT_What decisions did we take in the Stockholm Project WAAP launching meeting ?_ Stockholm'de aldığımız kararlardan bazıları

1- Developing it in each of our study visits; we will have our project manual book prepared at the end of the year, which has been also accepted by the Turkish national agency.

2- Some of the focus group meetings in each school could be arranged and even partially completed before the partner teachers arrive, just make sure you take the picture of each activity.

3- As for the survey questions, before the meetings in each school the hosting teacher who knows the realities of his or her school better will prepare some questions designed for the school itself and the other partner teachers can help by either adding more questions or by giving suggestions using their previous experiences.

4- Because of the high traffic of the study meetings during the 1^st year, some of our partner teachers decided not to attend the study visit held in Stockholm where most of the study visit activities have been already completed. After the changes in the dates of the study meeting, here are the new agenda for study visits;

a) 11-17 January _ Kolbiel / POLAND

b) 8-14 March _ Munich / GERMANY

c) 19-24 April_Istanbul / TURKEY

d) 16-23 May _ Madrid /SPAIN

5- After the 2 students we brought to Stockholm, now we have 8 students left for the 1^st year (unless you are to bring more using your limit which is 14), so we bring some alterations of 3 + 3 +2 = 8 students to the study meetings accordingly.

6- Just before each study visit, we will e-mail the list of common activities and their approximate fees, so that we will be able to guess the spending of the next visit. As the teachers pay the common students activities like entrances to museums etc, make sure you arrange activities whose fees do not exceed a limit arranged by teachers. Remember that the other expenses are paid by students using their own pocket money. Therefore, by giving the approximate fee in the list, try to be clear about the spendings.

7- We’ll have 6 or 7 nights all together during the week, please try to arrange 1 or 2 nights optional activities or night-off for teachers as sometimes they need their own space or just to rest.

8- Before we book, we’ll surely ask for the drink service in the hotel as we all need hot drinks in the evening.

9- Try to prepare the certificates in advance the visit, once the names for both teachers and students are ready. The certificates should be signed and stamped by the hosting school and its head teacher and preferably on a thick (cartoon) paper.

10- Some cultural differences could be explained to guests on the 1^st day of the meeting, which will ease our understanding with the new experiences there.

11- We’re always better if we can know about coming students in well advance of the meetings, such as how many boys and girls are coming, only this way we can arrange better hosting families.

12- We’d better pay the things ourselves rather than the hosting school, so that the price differences specific to countries won’t bother us at the end. If any school wishes to pay something special, it should be described in the list to be sent everyone before the meetings.

13- We’ll have the chapters of the manual book shared among us.

REPORT_Stockholm'daki tüm ortak faaliyetlerin günlere göre özet raporu_ prepared for Turkish regional education centre

7-15 Kasım 2009 tarihinde İsveç’in Stockholm kentinde okulumuz hem İngilizce öğretmeni hem de Project WAAP koordinatörü olan Ergin ŞENDAĞ ve beraberindeki proje görevlisi öğrenciler Merve COŞKUN ve Duygu ÖZTÜRK’ ün katıldığı proje açılış toplantısı sonuç raporudur:

1- Açılış toplantısına katılmak üzere Cuma gecesi Atatürk havalimanından yola çıkan ekibimiz Cumartesi öğlen 12.00 civarında Stockholm havalimanında çalışma ziyaretimiz öncesinde proje ortağı tüm öğretmenlerin ortaklaşa belirlediği ev sahibi öğrenciler ve aileleri tarafından sıcak bir şekilde karşılanmış ve tüm öğrencilerimiz söz konusu ailelere teslim edilmişlerdir. Hemen ardından ev sahibi İsveç okulumuzun proje ortağı öğretmeni proje koordinatörü öğretmenimize hafta boyunca ev sahibi okulun tüm öğrenciler için hazırladığı faaliyetler hakkında kısa bir brifing vermiştir.

2- Pazar günü söz konusu ailelerin de katılımıyla diğer İspanyol, Polonyalı ve Alman öğretmen ve öğrenciler havaalanında aynı şekilde karşılanıp tanışıldıktan sonra kısa bir şehir tanıtım gezisinin ardından misafir ailelere teslim edilmişlerdir.

3- Pazartesi sabahı ev sahibi okulun öğretmenlerine yönelik yaptığımız ve ev sahibi okul müdiresinin bizi ve projemizi okul genelinde tanıttığı toplantının ardından projede görevli öğrencilerimizle beraber “ İnsan hakları evrensel bildirgesine projemiz çerçevesinden bir bakış” konulu bilgilendirme toplantımızı ve öğrencilerimizin diğer ortak okulların öğrencileriyle grup çalışmasına teşvik edildiği sunumlarımızı başarıyla sonlandırdık. Okuldaki aktivitelerimiz ile yorulan öğrencilerimiz aynı gün önce akşam yemeğine götürülmüş ve oradan da öğrencilerin karşılıklı rekabet içerisinde grup çalışmasına teşvik edildiği salon bowling turnuvasına katılmışlardır.

4- Salı günü sabah erkenden toplanan proje ortağı öğretmen ve öğrenciler projeye katılan tüm öğrencilerin kendilerini, okullarını kültürlerinden kesitler eşliğinde tanıttıkları “neden Project WAAP’da aktif olarak görev almak istedim?” konulu dersimize katılmışlardır. Yaklaşık 3 saat süren sunumlarımızın ardından ev sahibi okulun öğrencileri misafir öğrencileri öğlen yemeğine davet ettiler. Öğlen yemeğinin ardından “Project WAAP ile kültürler arası diyalog” konulu bilgilendirme dersimizi sunan proje koordinatörü öğretmenimiz, her okulun kendi şartlarında yaşadığı zorlukları ve iyi örnekleri sırayla öğretmen ve öğrencilerden dinlemiş ve bazı çözüm önerileri sunmaları amacıyla grup çalışması ödevleri verilmiş ve sırasıyla tüm gruplar söz alarak görüş bildirmişlerdir. Gün sonunda söz konusu derslerden yorulan öğrencilerimiz hep beraber Stockholm hayvanat bahçesinde bulunan ülkeye özgü canlıları rehber eşliğinde inceleme fırsatı bulmuşlar ve günün sonunda “buz pateni” faaliyetinde tecrübeli öğrenciler misafir öğrencilere tek tek buz pateni yapmayı öğretmiş ve önemli bir grup-içi yardımlaşma örneği sergilemişlerdir.

5- Çarşamba günü sabah erkenden tekrar okulda toplanan tüm proje ortağı öğretmen ve öğrencilere Stockholm şehri tiyatrosunda görevli bir uzman öğretici tarafından “neden insanları dış görünüşleri ile değerlendiriyoruz? ” konulu 2 saatlik bir bilgilendirme toplantısı yapılmış, ” yabancı düşmanlığı ve topluma olumsuz yansımaları ” konusunun tüm öğrencilerimiz tarafından anlaşılabildiği memnuniyetle görülmüştür. Aynı günün sonunda bu dersler ile yorulan öğrencilerimize edindikleri teorik bilgilerini yeniden değerlendirebilmeleri fırsatı verme amacıyla “Living History Forum” adlı müzeye ziyarette bulunmuşlar ve burada uzman öğretici görevlimizin bir buçuk saat boyunca “Dünya savaşı yıllarındaki acı tecrübeleri” anlattığı bilgilendirme toplantısına katılıp ilgili videoları seyretmişlerdir. Aynı günün gecesinde tüm ev sahibi annelerimizin kendi hazırladığı yöresel yemekler eşliğinde her öğrencimiz kendi evinde akşam yemeği etkinliğine katılmışlardır.

6- Perşembe günü tüm proje öğretmen ve öğrencileri önceden belirlenen noktada toplanmış ve özel otobüsler ile şehir tanıtım turu yapılmış, bunun ardından şehrin tarihinin anlatıldığı rehber eşliğinde “Gamla Stan” bölgesi ve tarihi dokusu incelenmiştir. Bu faaliyetin sonunda kraliyet sarayının önündeki asker nöbet değişim etkinliği izlenilmiştir. Daha sonra vapur ile yarım saat mesafede bulunan VASA MUSEUM adlı denizcilik tarihi müzesine gidilmiş, burada “ünlü vasa gemisinin kurtarılma sürecinde yaşananlar ve denizcilik tarihi” adlı bir film seyredilmiştir. Günün sonunda oldukça yorulan öğrencilerimiz kısa bir alışveriş imkânının ardından evlerine dönmüşlerdir.

7- Cuma sabahı erkenden misafir okulda toplanan proje ortağı öğretmenler; açılış toplantısının kısa bir değerlendirmesini yapmışlar, daha sonraki öğrenci hareketliliği sürecine sağlayabileceğimiz katkıları dinlemişler, ilerideki tarihlerde her ortak okulda gerçekleştirilecek olan çalışma ziyaretlerinin tarihleri, içeriği ve bu konularda öğretmenlere düşen sorumluluklar konulu son bilgilendirmenin ardından okul idaresine yapılan bir teşekkür ziyareti ve öğrencilere katılım sertifikaların verilmesi sağlanmıştır. Daha sonra da öğleden sonraki ev sahibi bir beden öğretmeninin sunacağı ve yöresel bir spor olan buz hokeyini tanıtacağı derse katılmışlar ve ardından da 1.lig kategorisinde mücadele eden iki ekibin karşılaşmasını izlemek üzere buz hokeyine salonuna götürülmüşlerdir.

8- Cumartesi günü gençlere bilimsel çalışmaları ve bireysel araştırma becerisini kazandırmayı hedefleyen bir müze olan “Tom’s Tits Experiments” adlı müzeye bir gezi düzenlenmiş, burada öğrencilerimiz gruplar halinde yaklaşık olarak 100 adet deney standını yerinde incelemişler ve bazılarını sağlanan imkânlar ile yerinde uygulama fırsatı yakalamışlardır. Gün sonunda tüm ev sahibi ailelerin yöresel yemekleriyle katıldığı bir veda gecesi düzenlenmiş, burada çok kültürlü bir müzik korosu dinlenmiş ve ev sahibi okul müdürümüzün katılan tüm ekiplere teşekkür etmesinin ardından geceye son verilmiştir.

8- Pazar günü sabahtan itibaren tüm gruplar diğerleriyle vedalaşarak ülkelerine dönmek üzere yola çıkmışlardır. Bizim ekibimiz de kendi ev sahipleriyle hava alanında kısa bir vedalaşmanın ardından öğlen 15.30 da Stockholm’dan başlayan ve Almanya’dan aktarma ile devam eden yolculuk sonucunda gece 23.00 de İstanbul’a dönebilmişler ve tek tek ailelerine teslim edilmişlerdir.

The WAAP project had firstly begun when we made our students meet each other through pen friendship activities in foreign language classes last year, following that many students of partner schools has helped us to design the project elements since then. Therefore from the designing of the project, during very first project meeting, through the project study meetings , multicultural activities, evaluations, after the official end and widening of the WAAP project, STUDENTS of both partner and other local schools will be actively involving in most of the steps taken within the projects in certain ways some of which are listed below:

WAAP projemiz_We Are All People_ Hepimiz insanız!) proje ortaklığı yaşadığımız okullarımızdaki gençlerin farklı ırk ve kültürlere karşı sergiledikleri ırkçı davranışların eğitimciler ve okul yönetimi tarafından görmemezlikten gelinme sebeplerini keşfetme niyetinde olduğu kadar, öğretmenlerin de yeni bir “tedbir paketi” ışığında problemi fark etmelerini, ırkçı önyargıları önleyen yeterliliklerin, öğrencilerin potansiyellerine ulaşma konusunda öz güvenlerini arttıran becerilerin, davranışların, çok kültürlülüğün, kültürel anlaşılmanın artarak teşvik edilmesini hedeflemektedir. Velilerle, öğretmenlerle, öğretmen yetiştirme merkezleriyle, okul yönetimleriyle ve yerel uzman kurumlarla işbirliği yapma gibi çeşitli çalışmalarımız vasıtasıyla öğrencilerimizi değişik kültürler, dinler, etnik kökenler, geleneklerle aşina kılarak, onların sahip oldukları benzerliklerin farkına vardırmayı, “ötekileri” anlamak için karşılıklı hoşgörüyü inşa etmelerini ve böylelikle ırkçılıktan yoksun bir toplum oluşturmalarını planlıyoruz.

WELCOME

In the century of new millennium, Europe is seeing an alarming resurgence in xenophobia and racism both of which poison the atmosphere of trust we need in order to live in peace and harmony. We all accept that an individual cannot be born a racist but only learn to become one. Children develop their ideas on racial difference from the variety of messages they receive mainly from their peers, parents and the wider community, they are not simply passive recipients of this information.
